Open Source

I think open source development is a superb idea. It is reminiscent of the idea of what a university should be. People openly collaborating and sharing their work with others of the same mind. It also allows for criticism and questioning of one's own work. I think that's crucial to avoid making poor assumptions, and helps prevent the propagation of errors.

What's vital to open source though is fair credit. People have a deep need for credit for their labor and creativity. I try to do as much work as possible with an open source ideal and I make every effort possible to credit others when I gain from their work. I don't always succeed, and if it's brought to my attention a stern reminder is certainly appropriate.

On the other side of the coin is my own work. If someone should happen to read any of this and actually use it, give me credit where it is due. If lightning should strike and you happen to develop a commercial product from something here, good for you. But don't forget to donate to an open source group of your choice.
